I saw the new incrnation of The Mamas and the Papas in either 1986 or 87 at the Spartanburg Memorial auditorium in South Carolina. The line up was Spanky Mcfarland, Makenzie, John and Scott Makenzie. Flo and Eddie opened for them starting with a very loud rendition of Smoke on the Water that really rattled the middle aged hippies there. Several actually got up and left the concert. I thought they sounded incredible. John Phillips really exuded both charm and self-deprication. The highlight of the concert was the performance of Mississippi.
ReplyDeleteI was there too. Also had the Birds but trying to remember if there was a third act?
DeleteI saw M&P at the Masonic Temple in Detroit October 21, 1966 with my best friend Ellen. The hall was only half full and after the opening act played an announcer came out and invited people to move forward, as M&P liked to play to a close house. We were near the back but managed to climb and wiggle our way into the very front row and sat at the feet of John Phillips. My first cool concert.
ReplyDeleteThat show was on oct 28 ‘66 (not 21st)
DeleteKnown songs: I saw her again (opener); CA dreaming; Dancing in the street ( closer)
Who were the opening band??
DeleteI have a collection of itineraries from when I was with the new Mamas & Papas. Let me know if I can help. Oh, and the name is Laurie Beebe Lewis...not Laura Beebe :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd pictures!!! lauriesmusic.com
ReplyDeleteI attended the concert in Sacramento on January 14, 1967.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, there were two opening acts. The first was a forgettable rock band (which I've successfully forgotten) and the second was some guy who sang crossover country music. He once had a hit record called "Universal Soldier." I liked his stuff but many in the audience hated it and practically booed him off the stage. His name was Glen Campbell and he went on to much bigger and better things, including a long-running TV variety show.
Once the M&P made their entrance -- I think the opening song was "Straight Shooter" -- they put on a great show. Mama Cass knocked over a microphone stand, causing a short delay while they brought out another microphone, but otherwise it was a great performance.
I was there too. I don't remember the audience booing Glen Campbell, but I do remember him saying something grumpy to the audience, and I wonder if he was a bit tipsy because it didn't seem like his usual demeanor. BUT if he was hearing discontent from the audience, that explains his response, and alcohol didn't have to be part of it.
DeleteI was also there and I don't remember the rock band either. Glen Campbell didn't impress me, but most of us were there for the Mamas and Papas and the rest was just killing time. My very first concert and it was great!
DeleteI'm a child of the sixties, born in 1965. I have always been a fan of sixties music and became a rabid fan of the Mamas and Papas in the late seventies. I attended a show somewhere near Boston in the eighties (I can't remember when and where. I do remember it was a round stage, so the band had to walk by the audience to get to the stage. The venue was hardly full, but there was a respectable audience. John was there, along with Scott, Spanky and Mackenzie.
ReplyDeleteYears later I saw them at a country fair in Oregon. It was an outdoors day show. With so many other events, the band was largely ignored. I felt so bad for them. If I didn't show up with a gathering of my friends - about ten of us, they would have been performing for less than 20 people and a lot of empty chairs. John wasn't there, so Denny filled in.
I'm obsessed to know more about their live shows circar 1966-67. There is little to none information. No extensive reviews, set lists and sadly no recordings (excluding Monterrey Pop). Only one or two rare pictures of them on stage. So many other famous bands have extensive archives - shows, recordings, and visual documentation etc...Granted, they were not a heavily touring band, but in their brief time together, they did manage to perform live around thirty-something times. How come there is not at least one bootleg recording, reviews, and more stage photos? It's really disappointing.
.
I'm just digitising my tape of a Mamas and Papas concert at Cronulla Leagues Club in Sydney, Australia. It was 21st April, 1994 with the Denny, Scott, Lisa and Deb lineup. Set list was Straight Shooter; I Saw Her Again; Dedicated to the One I Love; Hey Girl; I Call Your Name; 12.30; Somebody Groovy; Do You Want To Dance; Word of Love; The Year 2000; Dancing in the Street; Go Where You Wanna Go; Love Song; San Francisco; Dream a Little Dream of Me; Creeque Alley; Monday Monday; California Dreaming; Got a Feeling; Straight Shooter. The only time they ever got here, and I was thrilled to have that one chance to see those songs done live. Denny signed a couple of albums, and Scott signed my Journeymen album, which topped off a night I'd long dreamed of. That's always been the tough bit about living in Australia - you saw most of the groups you really loved on TV or film.

ReplyDeleteBowling Green State University, 6667 or 68. It was a Saturday and my buddies and myself That played basketball went to Bowling Green State University is Anderson Arena to shoot some hoops. No big deal. When we got done we went to the locker room I laid my head down for a rest. When I woke up everyone was gone and looking at my basketball in the locker room I decided to go out and shoot some hoops. As I entered on the floor there was a lot of work being done to my left on the card so I want to the right side of the court to shoot hoops. I had no idea what time it was . All four of them came onto the floor and started shooting hoops with me. Mama Cass would take both of her hands lower the ball between her knees and throw the ball up to the rim and she was pretty damn good. Michelle Phillips was very very pretty but didn't say much and didn't play any basketball with the three of us. Dan shot some hoops he probably shot the most and John was the best of all. So they got in a huddle ask me to come over I was maybe 10 at the time, and wanted me to come back to watch them saying later that night which terrified me because I was on a curfew. They all laughed and I remember Michelle calling me a very cute boy which I didn't take too very much but she had a very pretty smile. I ask what time the concert was. I honestly don't remember. John asked me what time am I supposed to be home I told him 5 o'clock for dinner he said son you better get rolling it's 6 o'clock and that terrified me because I knew what was coming when I got home. I have googled this mama and papa's concert at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I am 60 years old . This is on my bucket list, I saw them I met them I played basketball with all four of them we had conversations and I tore out of there like a hungry right at four I was late for dinner. I cannot find anywhere where they played Bowling Green State University between I would now says 65 through 68. I hope you have much better luck than me because I know they were there, Good luck on your search God bless David
ReplyDeleteI have an ad indicating that the Mamas & Papas show at McCormick Place in Chicago on 10/30/66 had Saturday's Children and the Foggy Notions as opening acts. My one memory of the show is John coming out in his goofy fur hat.
ReplyDeleteI have a ticket stub torn in half. The left side says
ReplyDeleteUnic (Unicorn)
Coffee
Fri. Oct. 14 8:30
Commonwealth
Mamas
Papas
The back side says "$3.50"
I assume this is the 1966 Boston concert on your list.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.

There was a tour date in 1967 in Chicago with Jimi Hendrix opening, I know, I was there. I was taken by a friend at the time I had no idea who he was and I had never heard any of his music before! It was crazy I don't remember the venue but I remember we went into Chicago from the suburbs on the train accompanied by my friend's mother who actually waited for us in an assigned parents like waiting room somewhere in the venue. I never see this concert listed anywhere I would love to know the actual date. I no longer have contact with my friend to try and pick his brain any help would be greatly appreciated
